Burundi Rimiro Natural
Root Beer, Plum, Sweet Citrus

Welcome Burundi Rimiro, a meticulously-processed natural coffee from the Ngozi province! Coffee cherries are selectively picked, floated, and then laid out to dry for 3 to 4 weeks in a single layer. During this time they're continuously sorted and picked, milled, and then hand-sorted yet again by a pair of hand-pickers. They look closely at every single bean to ensure zero defects. It takes two hand-pickers a full day to cull through a single 60kg bag. UV lighting is also used, as any bean that glows usually indicates a defect, and those beans are removed. In the cup this coffee is sweet, juicy and clean with notes of root beer, plum and sweet citrus.

Most coffee trees in Burundi are Red Bourbon for reasons of quality. Despite the ubiquity of coffee growing in Burundi, each smallholder produces a relatively small harvest. The average smallholder has approximately 250 trees, normally in their backyards. Each tree yields an average of 1.5 kilos of cherry so the average producer sells about 200-300 kilos of cherry annually.
During harvest, every coffee cherry is carefully hand-picked. Most families manage between 200 and 250 trees, with the harvesting process largely handled by family members. Smallholder farmers deliver their cherries either to a central washing station or to one of the 10 to 15 collection points located throughout the growing regions. Farmers receive equal payment for cherries of the same quality, no matter where they choose to bring them.
Burundi has often been overshadowed by its East African neighbors in the specialty coffee scene. Yet, nearly all of its coffee comes from smallholder farmers, many of whom produce outstanding quality beans. Known for its exceptionally sweet, clean, and frequently floral flavors, Burundi is steadily gaining recognition as a rising star in the specialty coffee world.
